When Earl and his black spaniel mix were fishing, the small boat capsized. When the boat flipped over, Earl put Lacy on top of the boat to make sure she stayed safe. He stayed in the water wearing his life jacket.

Earl continued to hold on the boat’s hull while waiting for rescuers. The water temperature was about 50 degrees.

Another fisherman, who watched as a state trooper paddled out to Earl and Lacy, said that Earl asked the state trooper to take the dog first.

Earl said that Lacy is like a child to him and his wife and has meant a lot to him especially since they lost both of their children in a car accident 15 years ago.

When Katherine Hawkins, an eight-year-old girl from Atlanta, first saw Rocky’s picture on the Internet, she just fell in love with this golden retriever who was looking for a new home.

But Rocky needed surgery because he had been hit by a car and his previous owners had never treated his broken leg.

Without ever meeting Rocky, Katherine started to raise money to pay for Rocky’s surgery. She first gave up her allowance and then started selling cookies.

Katherine’s mother said, “You cannot resist a little 8-year-old girl holding this envelope saying would you please give money to help this dog that’s been run over.”

This motivated young girl raised over $1,000 dollars which was about half of what Rocky’s surgery would cost.

Adopt-A-Golden, where Rocky was staying, was so impressed with Katherine’s efforts that they knew that she would make a loving and caring owner for Rocky.

“Deer are very, very tricky but this one has spirit. He’s an extremely feisty little guy and quite pushy,” sanctuary founder, Mr. Stocker said.

At just over a pound, Rupert was kept in a life-supporting incubator with all the symptoms of a premature human baby. Staff knew that he had an unpredictable chance of survival but held onto hope as they tried this method of keeping him alive.

Unfortunately, the hospital staff was unable to sustain his life and Rupert passed away after a few days.

23 August 2003: Clarabelle’s story started out like many.. a phone call from someone who “loved” their pig but was moving to a subdivision where they couldn’t take her. (Around here that’s pretty unlikely.. we allow about everything in the yard here except perhaps full grown Rhinos) So the true story was probably that they had tired of Clarabelle.

Christina and I went to pick her up one day in April and found her in a pen with a tree down across it so she could go out into the woods and escape. A second effort was required, with a temporary pen being built to catch her in.

Once home to the sanctuary she was found to be exceedingly head shy, as though she had been often hit. I typically toss handfuls of “seek and eat” treats like nuts or cookies and the yard pigs always come running to grab them but not Clarabelle. She would run away as though I was throwing stones. But as time went on her delightful natural personality emerged. A very funny and talkative girl was Miss Clarabelle! Her ear was badly mangled and her nose deformed from a time in her youth when she was attacked by the family’s dog.. but when she “giggles”, (I swear that’s what it is) she is just a delight.

Clarabelle is only three and too fat and would have been slimmed down before spaying but when she developed some “female” problems a few weeks ago I got her in for spaying right away. The beginning of her nightmare…One problem ahs been solved only to find another and yet another.. and today she is recuperating (we hope completely) from her latest surgery. For the past two weekends I and the vet staff at our clinic have labored to keep this girl alive. 2 emergency surgeries followed the original spay surgery, both on weekends.. I thank my lucky stars I can count on my vet clinic to answer the emergency call in under 3 minutes and meet me with a full staff as fast as I can get there.. day or night…every time.. and I have certainly “tested” them lately!

You don’t even want to know what the vet bill is.. nor do I..

This is a true story about a cat named Sable. She is almost 5 years old now. Sable is a hero, and she has heroes of her own. Her heroes are Debi and her daughter Kayla. They all live in the town of Cuthbert Ga. Sable’s Mother was a stray cat that had two kittens under Debi and Kayla’s house.

When Debi and Kayla saw them, they brought them all inside, and named them. The Mother cat and one of the kittens were calico, So they named the Mother cat Cali, and the look alike kitten Tigger, and the other one Sable. Sable is a black cat. They saw that the gnats had gotten to Sable’s eyes, so they took her to the Vet. Her eyes were very badly infected. The infection left her blind in one eye and she can hardly see out of the other one.

The Mother cat, Cali, disappeared one day, never to be seen again. Tigger got sick and had to be put to sleep. Tigger was Kayla’s favorite, although she loved them all. This is a poem that Kayla wrote when they had to have Tigger put to sleep. Kayla was in grade school at the time.

Tigger

In 2000, Cali had a kitten, that was the size of a mitten.

Since she was bigger than the other,

I named her Tigger, because she looked like her Mother.

Later she got sick, and began to look like a stick,

so we took her to the Vet, because I wanted to keep her my pet.

Three months passed, that went really fast,

and she was at the Vet again.

And in my mind, I knew it was time.

On February 2, 2001, I thought this day would never come.

We had to put her to sleep, and instead of going to the homecoming game,

I was digging a hole one foot deep.

Written by Kayla

(Well done, Kayla)

It is lucky for Debi and Kayla that Sable survived, because in the first week of February 2005, Debi had removed a burner cover from her stove top, and had turned the burner on under the pan she had put on the burner, or so she thought. She went on to the back of the house to do something, and Sable came to where she was, meowing, and leaving the room, only to come back, meowing and leaving. Finally Debi followed Sable to the kitchen, and upon arriving, saw that the stove was in flames!! She had turned on the wrong burner!! Debi said that if it weren’t for Sable, things would have been MUCH worse. Debi said that she had put new batteries in the smoke alarm, but it never went off!!

So, for all of these heroes, I say THANKS Debi and Kayla for taking those cats into your home, and giving them the care they needed, and THANKS to Sable, for repaying them for their kindness, by alerting them to the fire, which could have been a real disaster!!

Emergencies are always an extremely tense time as a vet. Typically a life is on the line and seconds count. Obviously in this situation, its rare to be able to raise a laugh. And sometimes, despite every part of your body telling you to, its just inappropriate to.

Six months ago, a client of mine came running into the clinic frantically; and understandably so. Her dog had just fallen 2 floors and landed on the ground. It was apparently unconscious but had begun to come to and show some good positive signs of life to my great relief. When she arrived in the clinic, the dog was up and even sniffing the table when I placed it there to begin the examination.

“Is she dead?” were the first words that the owner had. It was an easy question to answer for obvious reasons. The dog was now walking around on the table.

As I began to look over the dog, the next statement didn’t make the situation any more normal.

“I should warn you. I do something that’s a little strange”

Unperturbed, I continued my examination. When I reached the hips of the dog. A strange- no a remarkable thing happened. For as my hands touched the dogs upper thighs, the owner of the dog began violently and loudly burping. She belched uncontrollably until I removed my hands from her dog.

Shocked, I asked if she was ok.

“I feel their pain” was her response. The belching continued as I felt over her dog “Maxine’s” back legs. Thankfully, as I navigated back towards the dogs head, the winds calmed and the burping abated.

Thankfully there were no broken bones. Just bruises. Bruising mirrored by my gums that were being bitten and chewed as a way of holding back the torrent of laughter that had built up like a tropical cyclone in my belly.

Yes, according to my friend, she ‘feels’ animals pain and ‘heals’ them by ‘burping’ out their waste products.

Not a normal way to heal an animal, but nonetheless an alternative ‘alternative’ therapy. As time has gone by, I have got to know this special ‘animal healer’ and her popularity with pet owners has increased dramatically to the point that she now runs a full time business ‘healing’ animals in her special way.

Jamison – Pet Stories Loving lizards is an acquired taste. As a child I was always fascinated with the little creatures. Besides crawling outside the screened-in porch of my Florida home with their flicking and bobbing heads, I witnessed spotted geckos sticking to windows and walls with their suction-cupped fingers. Strangely, they grunted in a low pitched tone on humid nights.

Growing up, I couldn’t learn enough about lizards. To me they were small dinosaurs deserving of respect. Being a female, my interest in lizards often surprised people. Never afraid of them, I came to discover that there were literally thousands of varieties with varying shapes and unusual colorings.

My favorite reptile was one of the largest, the giant Green Iguana. With brown striped tails, giant spikes on their head and back, razor sharp nails on alien-looking, multiple jointed fingers, these creatures intrigued me. Native to South America, Iguanas run wild in many areas of the Dominican Republic, Equator, and Galapagos Islands. Even in the tropical paradise Cancun, they swim in hotel pools and bury their giant long bodies in the sand underneath the sidewalks. Males can grow over six feet long.

Finally I obtained a six inch baby. Immediately I learned that these lizards don’t think of themselves as pets nor do most other people.

“What the hell is that? It’s face looks like a frog and it’s got a snake tail and a fat tongue?” A friend asked. “Is it venomous?”

“Can it shoot those spikes off its head and back?” another questioned. “Isn’t that a pest, not a pet? It looks like a bunch of different animals stuck together. Don’t they feature those in Japanese monster movies? Why don’t you get a normal thing like a dog?” others derided.

Most of my friends didn’t enjoy Jamison’s presence or touching him. Either some refused to go out on the porch when he was there or stand near his indoor six foot cage. Although Jamison presents a very frightening appearance, he has developed a sweet personality, eating right from my hand and licking my face. On the porch, Jamison befriended other native lizards and was easily trained to use an empty litter box. Over the years he grew to be a family member; he also grew to be nearly four feet long.

One misty morning, I walked out to the patio to discover his custom made shelf was empty. Nearby, the screen which once sported a very small tear, now was completely ripped out. Finding him missing, I cried out in horror. “Jamison!”

Immediately panicking, I knew what dangers lurked out there. With so many neighborhood dogs, cats, wild birds and raccoons, any one of them could take a bite out of my brilliant green reptile. With his striped tail, he could easily be spotted in the grass. Fearing the worst, I handed out flyers to neighbors, only to find a couple of my Hispanic neighbors ate Iguanas in their southern homelands. I certainly didn’t want him to become a main course. I alerted the animal shelters, handed out missing posters, called the police, and animal shelters — anyone who would take a report. I pleaded for a call if a four foot lizard was spotted. I couldn’t risk people hurting him because they thought he was poisoness or dangerous. Jamison was a kind-hearted lizard who didn’t hurt anything! He wasn’t even a bug eater like other reptiles; Jamison ate vegetables, leaves, flowers and fruit. Unfortunately, he looks threatening.

As hours passed with him gone, my fear increased. Family and friends tried to console me. Some even helped my husband and me search with binoculars. Looking up trees, shaking bush branches and studying the ground, we continued, desperately trying to find him.

“I’m sure he’ll come home when he’s done exploring,” my husband attempted to comfort me.

During the night of the missing iguana, I hardly slept. There was a terrible storm, one of the worst Florida had seen in awhile. The wind pounded against the windows. It was even rather cold and iguanas need to stay warm to keep alive! This would have been a night I set up his heat lamp in his indoor cage. Now he was out in the rain and the chilling winds! Would he even survive the storm?

The next day my husband Louis went to the back yard to trim the bushes. “I’ll watch where I step and keep looking,” he promised.

I entered my home office to finish some editing, still worrying about Jamison, praying he’d be found. Suddenly, I heard Louis calling, “Come quick! Come quick! Jamie’s back!”

Rushing outside, I could hardly believe my eyes. Trotting across the grass and heading straight for his porch was my beautiful Green Iguana. With his three foot tail raised, Jamison actually looked happy to be plodding on home.

So the next time anyone asks me, “Are lizards pests?” I’ll remind them of Jamison, who is incredibly intelligent, potty trained, and able to find his own way home all on his own. He shakes his tail, bobs his head in his own way of communicating. Knowing him makes the whole world feel a little smaller. I now appreciate that even a giant Green Iguana with a frightening appearance can be incredibly smart and loving. Unusual looking creatures only serve as a reminder, that nature (God) doesn’t make mistakes.
